Get to know Kat Tomlin, Trip Leader

Kat is one of five children, and grew up in a bustling household where she found a love of animals, and also sports and an active lifestyle. Kat’s mom Anne didn’t have a lot of sports opportunities as a child, so she put her children in many experiences. Kat grew up with a love of dance, gymnastics, swimming, and a variety of sports. In high school she specialized in soccer, cross country and tennis, then club college soccer. Kat loved the competition of these sports, the community, and the drive to push yourself to be your best.

Kat found yoga in her early 20s. She loved getting stronger while also challenging the body to maintain flexibility and range of motion. She especially noticed how yoga helped her breathe deep, release tension, and find calm in a busy world. She decided to follow her joy and started an RYT-200 yoga program while working as a chemist in a job where she had to sit too much. Kat later became a high school science teacher then transitioned to a work at home mom, but yoga was always right there too to help deal with the stress of life and keep her balanced.

Kat has been teaching yoga for 18 years in a variety of settings and styles around Kansas City. She has come to love the deep stretch of yin, but also loves the challenges of hatha and vinyasa yoga. Kat relishes teaching yoga and looking out around the class seeing her students practicing in the way that works best for them, as they breath and feel, and connect to the present moment.

Outside of yoga, Kat and her husband Ed have two amazing boys and farm corn and soybeans as well as work in the financial and pickleball industries. Kat loves to read, interact with her pets, travel with her family, and tend her garden on 3 acres.

Kat believes every single body is unique, and we must listen to our body and find a practice that is safe, but also challenging in the right way. Kat is also certified to teach Pilates and believes strength is one of the key pillars of a long and healthy life. Kat believes life contains many choices, but one of the key choices in life is to Choose Joy. On this trip, we will seek joy in the jungle, joy in our practice, and joy as a community of people experiencing the beautiful nation of Costa Rica together!

Get to know Tamrin Massey, Yoga Teacher

Tamrin has embraced an active lifestyle from an early age, participating in sports throughout her childhood. She first fell in love with yoga through its physical challenges, finding joy in refining her practice and pushing her limits.

After the birth of her first child, Tamrin was encouraged to begin teaching yoga, and what started as a rewarding part-time opportunity grew into a lifelong passion. Over the past 20 years, she has continued to deepen her knowledge and expand her expertise. In 2015, she completed her 200-hour yoga teacher training and has since earned certifications in group fitness, barre, and mat Pilates.

While her journey began with the physical practice of yoga, Tamrin's teaching philosophy has evolved to embrace the powerful mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits of the practice. She creates welcoming, supportive classes where students of all levels can build strength, find balance, and connect with themselves both on and off the mat. Believing that yoga doesn't always have to be serious, she weaves humor into her classes, creating an atmosphere where it's just as common to share a laugh as it is to find a moment of stillness.

Outside the studio, Tamrin has been married for 25 years and is the proud mother of three teenage children, along with two beloved fur babies. She enjoys swimming, paddleboarding, reading, and watching movies. In addition to her work as a fitness instructor, Tamrin is a registered dietitian and proudly served four years in the U.S. Army.
